Comments:When I read last night in my Menlo Magazine about Lynn's (as I knew him) death, the very first word that came to mind in thinking of him was "passion". Lynn was one of my closest friends at Menlo, and we'd have great discussions (with Hugh Garol, among a few others) about all sorts of meaningless things of great apparent import. I'll never forget one night of our junior or senior year that Lynn, Hugh and I gave a Playboy multiple choice test of masculinity to to our dorm mates, and the hilarious

Comments:Lynn(bill) was one of two people in my life that I looked to as a father. When I was a child, he seemed kind and was one of the few people I could trust, instinctively. He wore these funny glasses, drove a VW bug, and I used to listen to him on KFSD as Bill Pepper. He awakened my intellectual and spiritual curiosity and I am certain he has influenced a great deal what I am today. I have chosen a life of service to others and hope his influence and spirit will continue to help me aid the live

Message:I didn't know Bill as well as you all. He was introduced to me a year ago through a mutual friend at Dreamworks and he enjoyed reading my daily history page. We became e-mail pals and Bill liked sending me historical trivia he researched to augment my daily entries. His passing saddens me greatly but if I can offer any comfort my mind goes back to the saying of the ancient Egyptians- "When we die if we are kept in the hearts of our friends and family we have achieved immortality. If we are forgotten we die a second time." Reading the testamonials of all of you I don't think Bill has anything to worry about. I think he has achieved immortality. And if what Pascal said is true:" Life is but a brief interval inbetween two great infinities" We will all see him again.

Adieu for now dear friend.

Message:I count myself fortunate to be one of Bill's many friends. He and I used to walk along Monterey Bay together. We'd talk, laugh, argue, pray, talk, stop to eat, talk, laugh. Everybody who knows Bill, knows what I mean. Still for all of the many ways we knew Bill I can't help feeling that we didn't know it all. How could we? But I believe there is One who knows Bill all the way to bone -- and beyond. Bill was a father, a husband, a friend, a writer, a wit, a raconteur and more. But unto the God he loved, Bill was glad to be a sheep under the watch of the Good Shepherd. "I know my sheep and they know me." (John 10:14) I can't see Bill face-to-face to tell him how much I love him, how much I miss him. So I turn to his Lord for consolation. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Mt. 11:28) Yes, come, Lord Jesus, unto Bill -- and unto us all.

Message:I met Bill in 1991 when I was working at Apple and under the most unusual situation. Bill and I were members of a group e-mail address ACF (which means Apple Chistian Fellowship). ACF was an employee's non-denonminational Christian group mainly made up of fundamentalists Christians. It was one day when I received a e-mail from a member soliciting a seminar about non-Christian cults, and the Catholic Church was on the agenda. Being a Catholic, I couldn't help but to reply to the mail and do my best to defend our faith. I thought I was the only one fighting the issue, but not before long Bill teamed up with me in the effort. We ended up staging a two week's worth of electronics apologetics via e-mail. Since then we became good friends, and as we called ourselves -- Roman brothers. I consider this event and knowing Bill to be the most blessed moment of my life. Bill really inspired me the importance of really knowing and understanding our Catholic Faith and to really live our faith everyday.

I remember the times when we get together and going out for dinner, the time when Molly and Petrus were young and played in the backyard while we talked. There was that one time when Bill brought his whole family to visit us, and we all went to the Jing Jing Restaurant in Palo Alto for dinner. These images of laughter, fellowship, and sharing are always in our minds. Yes, Bill was a teacher, a gentleman, but also an apologist and the most important, a true Catholic.

Bill (or Uncle Bill, as Petrus always called him) we miss you. We know that God is holding you up in the palm of His hand, and you'll be shining like the sun.

Message:I met Bill through his wife Alice who I've known almost all my life. Alice was my sister Libby's best friend and really a member of our family in the 60s back in Ohio. She has always been one of my favorite people. So, that 4th of July night in 1995 on the Monterey Pier when I first met Bill, I guess I was not all that surprised when Bill turned out to be such a fantastic person. After all, he married a fantastic woman. The next time I saw Bill was 4 years later - again, over the 4th of July. There was the great barbecue at Bill and Alice's, wonderful conversation and a tour upstairs to look at the trains. (I could identify since I've always loved model trains). The last time I saw Bill was dinner in Carmel Valley at a Mexican restaurant. It was a great evening. Lots of laughter and more than a few Margaritas. In these few short times, I could see that my old and dear friend Alice (one of the best women in the world) had also found one of the best men in the world. And meeting Molly, knew that they had created one of the most wonderful girls in the world. So rare when this whole combination comes together. Here's to a person I wish I could have known better. And here's to a wonderful lifelong friend Alice ... and of course Molly.

Message:My favorite memory of Bill, out of an awful lot of them (we had offices right next to each other for two years, and we were very close friends), was the time we put the band together, quite literally. Bill and I both loved the blues, and as GRiD Systems' 1982 Christmas party approached, we decided to form "Big Bazoo and the Blue Warriors", along with Dan Price, Larry Gravelle, and Glenn Edens. We initially approached this as just a bit of light entertainment, but Bill had a great blues voice, and we got a little more serious. I've been in a number of bands, but I've never had more fun than that one-night stand. As we played the first song, Bill came onstage with a GRiD Compass (the first laptop computer, for those of you who missed it!) in a briefcase, took it out, and proceeded to join us on "keyboards". It was a really priceless moment. He then launched into "Burnin' in the Fog", a truly whacked tune that he wrote the lyrics for, and knocked the audience flat. It was amazing, since we'd never gotten it right in rehearsal, but that was really his moment. He had a way of bringing things together.

Bill was also the Grand Bazoo of East Uzbeckistan, a mythical country with a rich history. I remember how our little improvisations on this theme would get a bit out of hand, irritating some of the senior management and totally mystifying the recent additions to the staff. I'll never forget the Snarg fish, a creature that lived on toxic waste, Bardahl (the country's capital city, of course), Empress Garbagia, and her snotty sister, Snargetta.

Bill was one of the most creative, and truly, genuinely nice, people I've ever met. I moved out of California in 1986 and didn't get to speak with him much after that. But we would occasionally talk on the phone or by e-mail. Even when he was ill, the spark was still there. It took only microseconds, and we were back at GRiD in 1982, the laughter so intense I couldn't breathe. I miss him very much, and I grieve at his loss. But I'm so very enriched from having known him, and I'm so grateful for the time we spent together. His life was much too brief; maybe life always is, just by definition. But he left the world a much better place than he found it, and that's to my way of thinking the best definition of success.

So, here's to Bill, the Blues Warrior and The Grand Bazoo, and so much more.

Thx. Craig.

Message:Bill and I worked together at GRiD. He always had something wonderful going on. Laughter surrounded and immediate yet almost everything deeper and more subtle... he had a way about him that captured the moment and yet placed ideas in your head that stayed with you and got deeper over time. He savored the meaning of words and would turn them over like cherished pebbles and rearrange them until suddenly there was a new thought and a new structure and just the meaning that he wanted. He was extraordinary.

As a scrub in the business world, and having just escaped the button-down atmosphere of CDC (Control Data, not the Centers for Disease Control), I didn't quite know what to make of this character. Bill, while brilliant and committed to his work, was also brilliant and committed to living and sharing a rich life. Too few of us ever reach that level of wisdom. Message:I first got to know Bill in 1987 when we were both working at Apple. I wasn't working directly with Bill, but my friend Jody Larson was his editor on the infamous "Silver Surfer" (aka Fourth Dimension) and she somehow brought Bill and me together, probably over a sushi lunch. Although I don't have a specific memory of this, it seems likely that the three of us laughed so much that it was hard to finish the hamachi.Bill always seemed to me an odd cross between an old school preppy and a misplaced southern gentleman. Bill managed to combine the courtly with rapid acerbic wit, all bundled in proper preppy oxford cloth and khaki. There was a tremendous delicate kindness about Bill. His courtesy wasn't simple etiquette; it was borne of great sensitivity and tenderness. As Bill and I got to know each other we discovered a mutual interest in spirituality. Bill was a seeker. He was always looking for the key, the metaphysical basis for the troubling world around him. Bill was always enthusiastic, in the original sense of the word: he was with God. He was continually engaged in looking for ultimate truth in various beliefs and practices. Bill's search was pure in the sense that he wasn't looking for something that would fix him or his life. He was looking for much bigger answers. His final years in the Catholic Church gave him great comfort, and integrated his personal spiritual life with his family life, something I believe he had always wanted.Bill was also blessed with a profoundly erotic nature. I mean this in the sense that he was at home and alive in his senses and felt the ecstatic attraction to experience that comes to those who are open in this way. This was a gift he gave to others in various ways, from his finely crafted prose to his love of Dickens and old trains. It made him a friend whose broad understanding of human nature could be called upon when his friends needed it. In a grand way, Bill was open--mind, heart, body, and soul.Bill was simply a good man. He tried harder to live an ethical life than anyone I've known. And I believe he succeeded. He knew himself well. He learned from experience. He was able--and willing--to accept the often paradoxical nature of human existence. He was humble.I came to love Bill dearly and during the last few years he was an excellent friend to me. He struggled daily to fulfill his commitments, to be a good person in all his relationships. He gave me the gift of his humor, his patience, his caring heart. All of us who were lucky to be his friends will miss him terribly.
